Story and philosophy

The surgeon behind the scalpel.

For David R. Baquero Z., medicine was not a choice: it was his destiny. His paternal grandfather was a birth attendant who died the same year David was born.

As the family tells it, in the middle of labor his mother suffered what appeared to be a massive hemorrhage. She then saw his grandfather beside her bed, wearing the rubber sleeves of his trade. She felt a calm that let her fall asleep and, inexplicably, the emergency vanished without a trace.

Growing up with that story taught him that medicine arose in him naturally and inevitably. He is not someone who chose to work as a doctor; he is someone who was always meant to be one. Today, as a colon and rectal surgeon, epidemiologist and university professor, he brings colorectal surgery from the world's best centers to Colombia, without losing sight of the person behind every diagnosis.

“One must imagine Sisyphus happy.”
Albert Camus · The Myth of Sisyphus

Like Camus's Sisyphus, Dr. Baquero takes on the immense responsibility of the cancer operating room every day, a boulder that never gets lighter. He carries it with epidemiological, evidence-based rigor, but also with genuine joy, total dedication and a radical optimism that his patients feel from the very first visit.

  • Scientific rigor

Decisions grounded in evidence and epidemiology.

  • Dedication

Close support from diagnosis to recovery.

  • Radical optimism

Genuine joy in the face of the most complex challenges.

What does a colorectal surgeon treat?

Colorectal surgeons diagnose and treat diseases of the colon, rectum and anus, including:

  • Colon, rectal and anal cancer.
  • Inflammatory bowel disease (Crohn's disease and ulcerative colitis) that requires surgery.
  • Hemorrhoids, fissures and fistulas, especially complex or recurrent ones.
  • Polyps, diverticulitis and other conditions that need surgical or endoscopic care.
When should I see a colorectal surgeon?

Consider an appointment if you have rectal bleeding, a change in bowel habits lasting more than a few weeks, pain or a lump in the anal area, unexplained anemia or unexplained weight loss. Also if you have already been diagnosed with a colon or rectal condition and need a surgical opinion.

From age 45 to 50, or earlier if relatives have had colon cancer, talk to your doctor about screening to detect it early.

How do I book an appointment?

Message us on WhatsApp at +57 304 601 5053, call your preferred location during office hours, or fill out the form on this page. We will confirm the date and time by WhatsApp.

Yes. Dr. Baquero Z. accepts Coomeva Medicina Prepagada and Sura prepaid health plans, as well as private (self-pay) patients. Colombian EPS plans are not accepted.

Can I get a second opinion?

Yes. You can book a second-opinion consultation to review a diagnosis or a proposed surgery. Please bring your biopsy, colonoscopy and imaging results and any medical records you have.

What should I bring to my first appointment?

Your ID or passport, any tests related to your reason for consulting (colonoscopy, biopsies, CT or MRI scans, lab results), a list of the medications you take and, if you have one, a referral or summary from your treating doctor.

What is minimally invasive colorectal surgery?

These are techniques performed through small incisions or through natural openings, such as advanced laparoscopy and transanal approaches (TaTME, TAMIS). Depending on each case, they aim for less pain, faster recovery and better preservation of bowel function, with the same oncologic rigor.

What is laser surgery for hemorrhoids and fistulas?

It is a minimally invasive perianal procedure that uses laser energy to treat hemorrhoids and some fistulas. In selected patients it can mean less pain and a quicker return to daily life. It is not right for every case: the indication is decided at the consultation.

Do you see patients from other cities or countries?

Yes. Message us on WhatsApp to arrange an initial telehealth consultation or an in-person appointment in Medellín. Consultations can be held in English.
